Many of the dogs found shaking, starved and scarred in a cruel Bronx building super's basement fighting den in June are being restored to health and moved to agencies for possible adoption.
Police and animal rescuers removed 50 pit bulls and other dogs in the hellish hovel Raul Sanchez allegedly created in 1254 Sherman Ave.
On Tuesday, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) announced 26 of the dogs were transferred to animal welfare agencies throughout the Northeast, which will work to find them permanent homes. Another seven pups will be moved soon.
Police say Sanchez, 57, bred, trained and fought the dogs in the torture chamber filled with treadmills, crates stacked to hold the dogs, and a bloody playpen where the dogs fought.
After the raid on the basement, the ASPCA brought the dogs to an upstate shelter. They got healthy food, exercise, medical care and socialization and were evaluated by animal behavioral professionals.
Seventeen dogs were euthanized for medical or behavioral reasons.
Charles Henderson, founder and director of Charles Henderson Animal Rescue in Park Slope, Brooklyn is taking in three pit bull puppies and has high hopes all will soon be ready to live with families.
“I’m excited to find them good homes,” Henderson said. “These guys are not damaged goods. They’re not throwaways.”
