Maltese Puppy Left for Dead in Flatbush, Brooklyn

On Monday, October 1, 2012 around 9pm at night, Charles Henderson Animal Rescue received a call from a Good Samaritan..........

...........who had found a dog who she had seen get hit by a car and then settle under a bunch of leaves next to a tree.  She said she thought the dog had a broken leg and couldn’t walk.  Immediately I called my vet friend who owns One Love Animal Hospital on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY to solicit his help.  He was already closed for the night but he instantaneously agreed to help out and open his vet hospital to try and help this poor doggie if we could.

Upon arrival at the location,  I found a dog that was in really bad shape.  Firstly, I couldn’t believe the dog looked as bad as she did.  Secondly, I thought for sure that this dog was on her last leg.  She was totally & completely unresponsive.  I notified the Good Samaritan that I was going to take her immediately to the vet to try and save her life but that there may be the possibility that she may have to be humanely euthanized if her medical condition was insurmountable.

I drove quickly to pick up my great friend Dr. Ken Humphries at his house to take the doggie over to One Love Animal Hospital where Ken opened up his hospital after hours to try and save this precious doggie’s life.  One of Dr. Ken’s associates, Dr. Suzy, was still at the hospital, finishing up her work for the evening.  Dr. Suzy immediately dropped everything she was doing and rolled up her sleeves to help this poor little helpless doggie.  This dog was the worse matted dog case that Ken, Suzy & I had ever seen.

It took Dr. Ken, Dr. Suzy & myself 3 hours straight to remove all the matting and shave this poor little girl down so she would cease being tormented and tortured any longer from the constant pain that matted dogs go through.  The matting was so bad that this helpless puppy couldn’t even walk anymore and the matting had started to cut off the circulation in her legs.  She had localized cists growing in some spots on her lower legs and feet.  And she stank like shit and piss literally.  The poor little baby had been left like this since she was born.  We named her Danielle Pumpkin.  Danielle after the woman who had initially found her and Pumpkin by my daughter Charlie and Dr. Suzy.

The docs took one look at her teeth and although I had previously assumed that this dog was old and feeble, they quickly surmised that Danielle was between 9 months and a year old at best.  Because she had been so badly neglected, we didn’t think that she had a microchip but checked anyways and, lo and behold, Danielle was microchipped but because the microchipped hadn’t been registered, the trail to who may have been the perpetrator and committed this unconscionable and henous act of cruelty and neglect went cold and ended there.  The great news is that because of the actions of several individuals, Danielle Pumpkin was saved and has been completely cleaned up and we are now searching for her new forever home.

So far at the vets office where Danielle is staying at the moment, she has been nothing short of super sweet & super awesome according to Dr. Humphries and his staff.  It takes a tribe to raise a child and a group of concerned, caring & compassionate people to help the helpless and those less fortunate.  It was Danielle’s lucky day as her world has been completely changed for the better.  Danielle has gone from the outhouse to the penthouse thanks to the concerted efforts collectively of Danielle Martin-Alston, Dr. Ken & Dr. Suzy at One Love Animal Hospital and Charles Henderson Animal Rescue.  I am so honored to be apart of and associated with such amazing and wonderful human beings.

Pups rescued from Bronx dogfight chamber may be headed for homes

Pups rescued from Bronx dogfight chamber may be headed for homes

Many of the dogs found shaking, starved and scarred in a cruel Bronx building super's basement fighting den in June are being restored to health and moved to agencies for possible adoption.

Police and animal rescuers removed 50 pit bulls and other dogs in the hellish hovel Raul Sanchez allegedly created in 1254 Sherman Ave.

On Tuesday, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) announced 26 of the dogs were transferred to animal welfare agencies throughout the Northeast, which will work to find them permanent homes. Another seven pups will be moved soon.

Police say Sanchez, 57, bred, trained and fought the dogs in the torture chamber filled with treadmills, crates stacked to hold the dogs, and a bloody playpen where the dogs fought.

After the raid on the basement, the ASPCA brought the dogs to an upstate shelter. They got healthy food, exercise, medical care and socialization and were evaluated by animal behavioral professionals.
Seventeen dogs were euthanized for medical or behavioral reasons.

Charles Henderson, founder and director of Charles Henderson Animal Rescue in Park Slope, Brooklyn is taking in three pit bull puppies and has high hopes all will soon be ready to live with families.

“I’m excited to find them good homes,” Henderson said. “These guys are not damaged goods. They’re not throwaways.”

SCOTT's Story...
SCOTT---AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER---MALE---4 1/2 MONTHS

Scott is the brother of Sam and they are very similar in behavior and looks. Scott is a super sweet, happy go lucky, young puppy that is full of 4 ½ month old male puppy energy. Scott is a super sweet and with the right direction, he’s as gentle as a lamb and will turn out to be a great family dog. He just needs some puppy/dog manners and guidance. I spent a good 6 hours straight with this great guy and he is super sweet! He’s a very nice puppy. Quiet while residing in his crate after some exercise, he was a willing participant & willing went into his crate. Scott needs someone who understands APT and has had experience with APT or larger dogs like mastiffs or Rottweilers. He is willing to learn if you are willing to lead. Mush him up and he’s a sweet butterball but then he wants to take you for a walk and run the show. Show Scott the proper way to walk and live in harmony with rules and structure and he goes along with the ride. Scott needs that kind of training. He is not quite completely housebroken but with several walks a day, he is getting there. He does go to the bathroom outside but left for too long unattended, which shouldn’t be an option anyways, he will deposit some gifts in his crate. He is a great dog. He needs a great leader.

SCOTT/BROOKLYN---AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER---MALE---3 MTHS
Hi :) ...meet Brooklyn aka Scotty. Brooklyn is a rescue pulled out of a fighting ring in the Bronx. He is a 3 ½ month old sweetheart who likes to give kisses. Brooklyn is a smart Pit mix who loves to learn. He already knows how to sit, give paw and is learning to lay down. Brooklyn was neutered before being released from the ASPCA and has received all age appropriate vaccinations and tested for all common sicknesses. Spending a lot of one on one time with Brooklyn, he has shown to be a fun-loving, friendly puppy. He is beyond sweet and likes to snuggle. In my personal opinion, Brooklyn would make a fantastic therapy dog for people of all ages. He is filled with love and adores dogs and children. I have a 5 year old and a 9 year old and this sweet baby has never even attempted to jump on either of them. He is perfect for a family and I would love to see him excel to his full potential of being a therapy dog for anyone. Anyone who adopts him will definitely be a very lucky person. We adore him. :)
THIS WAS WRITTEN BY THE FOSTER MAMA WHO IS TAKING CARE OF BROOKLYN AKA SCOTT.

Scott is neutered, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas & ticks and is up to date with all his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $300 and he'll get a free basic exam at one of our participating vet's offices. If you'd like to adopt Scott, please email us at: charles@charleshendersonanimalrescue.org

Charles Henderson Animal Rescue is open every day from 12pm to 7pm. Scott is an awesome & young puppy that needs a great owner. Will you be that family or person?

Below is a small glimpse into Scott’s start in life but his luck has changed and he is on the road to a completely different type of life filled with love and play and pampering sprinkled with rules & boundaries and structure.

ASPCA Placing 33 Dogs Rescued from
Bronx Dog Fighting Operation with Rescue Partners
Multiple rescue groups throughout Northeast open their doors
to help give dogs second chance at life
NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced that 26 dogs rescued from a dog fighting operation have been placed with several animal welfare groups throughout the Northeast. Placement options for an additional seven dogs are also in the process of being finalized. The dogs, ranging from puppies to adults, were rescued in late June by the ASPCA, at the request of the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division and Bronx District Attorney’s office, from a dog fighting operation in the Bronx.
For more than two months, ASPCA responders cared for and provided the dogs with extensive socialization, a healthy diet, medical care and exercise at a temporary shelter. Each dog was carefully evaluated by a team of animal behavior professionals prior to being transferred to the rescue groups. The following groups will continue to work with each dog to address its specific needs, with the hope of eventually adopting each of them to loving homes: St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center (Madison, N.J.); Charles Henderson Animal Rescue (Brooklyn, N.Y.); Columbia Greene Humane Society (Hudson, N.Y.); and Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire (Bedford, N.H.). Some dogs have also been transferred to the ASPCA’s Adoption Center in Manhattan.
The unfortunate reality in many dog fighting operations is the propensity for a certain number of the dogs involved to exhibit extreme aggression, and therefore to be very dangerous. Sadly, this proved true in this case. While we have been able to place the majority of dogs, some of the dogs were euthanized. These particular dogs were tragic victims of the brutalities of dog fighting—bred over generations to exhibit aggression, trained to fight with lethal intent, subjected to a life of inhumane treatment, and as a result, showcased highly aggressive behavior. After extensive evaluations, the decisions to euthanize were based on recommendations of multiple behavior professionals who weighed in objectively and independently, with the best interest of each individual animal in mind.
On June 21, ASPCA responders assisted in the removal, forensic evidence collection, and on-scene documentation of 50 dogs seized from a dog fighting operation in a six-story apartment building in the Bronx. The dogs were living in crude cages in the corner room of a basement, rarely, if ever, seeing the light of day, unless they were brought outside the room to be trained or fought. The basement included a makeshift fighting arena with capacity for dozens of spectators. Also recovered from the scene were a loaded .25-caliber handgun, multiple pet carriers, U.S. currency, and paraphernalia associated with a sophisticated dog fighting operation, including dog treadmills, harnesses, muzzles, syringes, and a shopping cart full of raw chicken parts. The dogs were transferred to a temporary shelter, where they were triaged by the ASPCA’s veterinary medical team and later evaluated individually by the ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Behavior Team.
The superintendent of the building, Raul Sanchez of the Bronx, was arrested that day and arraigned on July 24 on the following charges: 63 counts of animal fighting (13 felony charges; 50 misdemeanor charges); six counts of aggravated animal cruelty (felony); six counts of animal cruelty (misdemeanor); and one count of criminal possession of a weapon (misdemeanor). If convicted, he faces up to four years in jail. The ASPCA’s Legal Advocacy team is also providing support to the Bronx District Attorney’s office to help prosecute this case. The next court date is scheduled for September 25.

JOEL---AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER---MALE---6 ½ MONTHS
Joel aka Joey is a VERY good puppy! He is very calm for his age. He loves to run and jump. At first he was petrified to walk down the stairs not sure if he was never exposed to stairs before or that he experienced a traumatic experience with stairs. He just learned how to walk down the stairs and sits when told to. He is currently being fostered in a family with 2 adults and 3 children ages ranging from (2, 4 & 10 yrs). He absolutely adores kids, loves to play hide and seek when the children are under the blanket calling for him. He will look until he finds his way in with the kids. When let out of his cage he likes to walk around the house. He only gets excited and hyper (puppy like) when the kids run around the house and stir him up to play. He does not bark whatsoever as of now. He sleeps in his cage at night and when we leave the house. (Part of crate training any puppy). He does not mind being in the cage. After every feeding which is 3x a day he is then walked 10mins after and has no problem going to the bathroom outdoors. If walked within a timely manner after his feeding he will not have any accidents in the house. It seems as though he knows his place he goes onto his dog bed and will not go onto the furniture, nor does he eat any household items when supervised. He has his toys and chews/plays with those only. He gives tons of kisses and is a mush. He loves to be loved! Overall, he is the absolute and I mean absolute perfect puppy a family can have. He is fine with cats, dogs, and children of all ages.

SAM's Story...
SAM---AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER---MALE--- 4 1/2 MTHS
Sam is a 4.5 month old puppy. He is like any typical puppy with high energy. He plays fetch, if I or my 2 yr old daughter throw the ball he goes and gets it brings it back to us. I have a 9 year old Shih Tzu & a 5 yr old Pomeranian who Sam gets along with well. They are smaller in size then Sam and older so they aren't too found of Sam’s puppy energy but they deal with Sam and Sam is learning to gauge his play with them. They play nicely except when Sam wants to pounce on them but they deal with Sam.
He's good with dogs of all sizes and cats. Sam sleeps in his cage at night and goes in when we leave the house. Sam doesn't bark while being in the cage. He gives kisses, sits and gives paw. He seems to be about 75% house trained (crate-training). Could probably be 100% if someone devoted more time in taken him out. He is eager to learn. Overall, he is an energetic playful dog. He is being fostered in a home with 2 adults, a 2 yr old girl and 2 small dogs. He deserves a playful very warm & loving home. WRITTEN BY SAM’S FOSTER MAMA

Adopt a Pet :: SOPHIE - Brooklyn, NY - Chihuahua

Adopt a Pet :: SOPHIE - Brooklyn, NY - Chihuahua

SOPHIE---CHIHUAHUA---FEMALE---7 YRS

Sophie was born on 7/7/05, and is a 7 year old Brindle, short haired Chihuahua who is a middle aged independent and lovable mother of two. She has always had a skiddish personality. She’s very clever and could easily be trained. She is very fit and a fast runner. Her teeth need work. She is currently not spayed but will be before she is adopted. She is trained to use a wee-wee pad. She has a very cute twisted tail and loves to borough into a pile of blankets to sleep.  She plays a funny game when asking for attention. Standing with her front paw in the air she’ll wag her tail and ask to come over. When you call her, she continues to stand there until you finally get up. Then she runs off to the bedroom to hide in her bed, under the blankets where you must retrieve her. She definitely likes the chase.  She asks for attention in literal ways. She will rise up on her hind quarters and wave her paws in the air asking you to pet her. If you are lying with her, she’ll touch your face with her paw repeatedly until you scratch her chest. She loves being scratched on her chest. She does not like anyone to stroke her ears.
She was never socialized with other dogs. I’m not sure how she would be trained as her reaction to other dogs is strong and negative. She barks a lot. I don’t think she would bite, but I don’t know for sure. I’ve only seen her snap at people defensively. She has never attacked another person or animal.
Sophie is a great mother. I watched her give birth to Tiger and Lola. I saw the look on her face after she licked them clean and have seen her be with them all her life. She is love. It has become incredibly difficult for me to care for her, the father of her pups and her two pups. It pains me beyond belief to have them adopted, but I also know she needs a higher quality of life than I can provide. If I had a wish about her adoption, it would be that she stay with Lola and Tiger. I think she would survive just fine without them. However, she still has maternal instincts towards the two.

Sophie will be spayed, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas & ticks and is up to date with all her vaccinations.  Her adoption fee is $300 and she'll get a free basic exam at one of our participating vet's offices. If you'd like to adopt Sophie, please email us at: charles@charleshendersonanimalrescue.org

Charles Henderson Animal Rescue is open every day from 12pm to 7pm. Sophie is an awesome and great dog that needs a great owner. Will you be that family or person?

Adopt a Pet :: LOLA - Brooklyn, NY - Chihuahua

Adopt a Pet :: LOLA - Brooklyn, NY - Chihuahua

LOLA---CHIHUAHUA---FEMALE---6 YRS

Lola is a middle aged and completely ‘dependent’ first daughter of Chucky and Sophie. She likes to sleep a lot but when she’s awake, it’s all about her. She usually wakes me up in the morning by coming out from under the covers to ask for a scratch by rolling over and over. She is a princess and loves to perch atop a pillow on the couch to survey her realm. She is thin and fit. She needs training on a leash as she’s not great with it. Her teeth need work. She’s currently not spayed but will be spayed before she goes home to her new adopter. She is trained to use a weewee pad.  She tends to get very excited at times and run frantically around the apartment and then spins around several times before starting it all over again. She loves to lick and will do so until you ask her to stop.  She has never been socialized with other dogs but I believe she has the capacity to learn to be around others.  Her exposure to strangers tends to result in a lot of barking. I’ve never seen her attack another person or animal.  I love Lola dearly. It has become incredibly difficult for me to care for her, her brother and her parents.  It pains me greatly to have to have them adopted, but I also know she needs a higher quality of life than I can provide. If I had a wish for her adoption it would be that she be adopted with her brother, Tiger.
They have been together all their lives and although I believe they would survive without each other, I think there will be a definite period of separation anxiety and pain. She needs someone to exercise her more, indulge her desire for attention, and love her. She will return the favor with zeal and earnest, unconditional love.

Lola is spayed, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas & ticks and is up to date with all her vaccinations.  Her adoption fee is $300 and she'll get a free basic exam at one of our participating vet's offices. If you'd like to adopt Lola, please email us at: charles@charleshendersonanimalrescue.org

Charles Henderson Animal Rescue is open every day from 12pm to 7pm. Lola is an awesome, energetic and great dog that needs a great owner. Will you be that family or person?

Adopt a Pet :: TIGER - Brooklyn, NY - Chihuahua

Adopt a Pet :: TIGER - Brooklyn, NY - Chihuahua

TIGER---CHIHUAHUA---MALE---7 YRS

Tiger is a middle aged somewhat independent and lovable rollypolly first son of Sophie and Chucky.  Like his father, he likes to chill out in a sunbeam in the morning. He is strangely dependent on your approval. For example, when walking along he’ll often turn around and look at you and ‘ask’ if it’s ok to continue. I always said yes. He is in good shape and neutered. His teeth need work. He is trained to use a wee-wee pad. He loves a warm bath, but even more than that, he loves being dried off with a thick towel; it’s guaranteed to make him snort with pleasure repeatedly. His personality is timid. He takes a bit after his mom, Sophie, that way. He often plays second fiddle to his sister, Lola. Once he warms up to you, he loves to sit on your lap or between your legs. He likes
monitoring your whereabouts and will often times follow you around and hang out and watch what you’re doing. He was never socialized with other dogs but I believe he has the capacity to learn to be around others. He tends to get excited around new people and dogs and he’ll bark. I’ve only seen him snap at people defensively. He has never attacked another person or animal.
Tiger is very special to me. He and I have bonded many a late night hanging out on the couch. It has become incredibly difficult for me to care for him, his sister and parents. Saying goodbye to Tiger will be so hard for me, but if he’s going to a good place then it’s for the best. My wish for Tiger would be that he is adopted with his sister, Lola. They have been together all their lives and I feel he would suffer the most with respect to a separation. He also needs a much higher quality of life than I can provide. He
needs someone to exercise him more, give him more comfort and love him. He will give back all of it and more.

Tiger is neutered, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas & ticks and is up to date with all his vaccinations.  His adoption fee is $300 and he'll get a free basic exam at one of our participating vet's offices. If you'd like to adopt Tiger, please email us at: charles@charleshendersonanimalrescue.org

Adopt a Pet :: CHUCKY - Brooklyn, NY - Chihuahua

Adopt a Pet :: CHUCKY - Brooklyn, NY - Chihuahua

CHUCKY---CHIHUAHUA---MALE---8 YRS

Chucky is a middle aged independent and lovable father of two. His routine consists of chilling out in the morning sunshine after a morning stroll. He loves to roll over on his back and get his chest and belly rubbed before passing out. He is neutered. He is 34 pounds overweight and could use more exercise and a change in diet would do him good. (He probably eats too many bananas.) His teeth need work.  He is trained to use a weewee pads. He has a bad rear right leg from a fall from when he was a puppy. He’s developed a limp recently and tends not to use it much.  One of his favorite games is him laying on your chest and playing chicken with your nose. He’ll give you a sidelong look before snapping at your nose. He never bites, just clamps gently down on the tip and then he withdraws and tries again. It’s a big sign of trust when he wants to play that way.  Although he was never socialized with other dogs, I believe he has the capacity to learn to be around others. He tends to get excited around new people and dogs and he’ll bark. I’ve only seen him snap at people defensively. He has never attacked another person or animal.
As much as I love Chucky, it has become incredibly difficult for me to care for him, the mother of his pups and his two pups. It pains me greatly to have to have them adopted, but I also know he needs a higher quality of life than I can provide. Chucky could survive on his own without too much difficulty.  He tolerates his family but would much rather be the center of attention. If I had a wish it would be that he is placed with someone who will give him 100%. He’s earned that. He needs someone to exercise him more, massage his legs, and love him. He will return the love tenfold.

Chucky is neutered, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas & ticks and is up to date with all his vaccinations.  His adoption fee is $300 and he'll get a free basic exam at one of our participating vet's offices. ZEUS---GIANT SCHNAUZER---MALE---3 YRS

Zeus is a 91 lb, male, 3 year old black giant schnauzer.  Zeus is housetrained, good on lead, and knows basic commands.  He came from a another rescue who told me the following backstory: his original family was a couple, he lived with ferrets, sugar gliders and cats.  I am not sure if the couple had dogs, but I was told he was good with dogs.

Zeus is not good with dogs.  The couple divorced and the woman took Zeus originally but she got a job with the railroad and was home 1 week a month.  Zeus was placed into rescue at that time.

Zeus is a really good dog, totally people oriented and it is believed that Zeus would be protective towards his humans from some of the behaviors noticed.  Zeus loves walks and is exuberant in his greetings.   Zeus is active, smart and needs an active family or person that will give him a great quality of life.

Zeus is neutered, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas & ticks and is up to date with all his vaccinations.  His adoption fee is $300 and he'll get a free basic exam at one of our participating vet's offices. If you'd like to adopt Zeus, please email us at: charles@charleshendersonanimalrescue.org

ASPCA Placing 33 Dogs Rescued from Bronx Dog Fighting Operation with Rescue Partners

Cops Uncover Illegal Dog Fighting Operating In Bronx Apartment

ASPCA Placing 33 Dogs Rescued from Bronx Dog Fighting Operation with Rescue Partners

Please consider a donation to Charles Henderson Animal Rescue today

It’s been long in coming and many protracted hard days of work but we are finally at a place where Charles Henderson Animal Rescue is open for business and has begun the process of rescuing, sheltering and rehoming unwanted and neglected dogs and cats.  In the past 3 weeks since we “kinda” started getting things in order, Charles Henderson Animal Rescue has rescued and rehomed 20 dogs already.Charles Henderson Animal Rescue is listed and recognized by the State of New York as a non profit corporation as well as a 501c3 not for profit charity organization with the IRS.  Additionally Charles Henderson Animal Rescue has been registered and approved. The Rescue Society, the formal and registered name of the non-profit, is doing business as Charles Henderson Animal Rescue and is classified as a “humane society”.

We still have along way to go and many more projects ahead that we need to productively execute however we have begun the process of rescuing and rehoming animals.  We are inundated daily with so many calls from people that have found or want to surrender their dogs and cats.  Every other call all day long is about kittens that people find all over the streets of Brooklyn and throughout New York City.

Charles Henderson Animal Rescue has identified a great building and we are just awaiting some last minute details before we open the doors.  The building space, the area and the neighborhood are ideal, perfect and exceptionally amazing for an animal rescue shelter and adoption center in Brooklyn, New York.   We are very excited about the situation and are eager to begin the next phase of the operation, namely getting the doors of the brick & mortar shelter & adoption center open.  We can’t get Charles Henderson Animal Rescue open fast enough!!!  Everyday wonderful cats & amazing dogs are needlessly dying.

We need your help.  Charles Henderson Animal Rescue needs money to help open & operate Charles Henderson Animal Rescue and your donations add up and help significantly.  We don’t need millions or even 100’s of 1000’s of dollars (although that’d be really nice!) but anything that you can contribute helps.  $10, $20, $50 really helps us do what we do so please consider a donation towards our cause and make an impact directly by helping the animals and the animal rescue shelter at Charles Henderson Animal Rescue.  Please help us and join us in our crusade to curb the shameful wholesale slaughter of 3-4millions of dogs and twice that many cats a year in the United States.

Your donations would help us get more kennels, install a new ventilation system for the dogs and cats and provide additional medical services to needy animals.  The no kill shelter which serves Brooklyn and the 5 boroughs of New York City, relies heavily on volunteers and private donations to carry on the mission of caring for animals and helping them find permanent forever homes. Running a shelter where you are attempting to rescue lots of dogs & cats can be expensive.  Your help is our lifeblood that keeps us saving, sheltering and securing permanent forever homes for these precious but helpless cats & dogs.
